Lesson 3 - Hellos and Goodbyes

A simple greeting depends on the time of day so we have
Guten Morgen in the morning,
Guten Tag during the day,
Guten Abend during the evening and
Gute Nacht for Good Night.

To say goodbye we have Auf Wiedersehen . Less formally we can use Hallo and Tschüß, the latter being the equivalent of 'cheers'.

Other useful phrases for introductions include:
Wie geht es Ihnen? which literally means 'How goes it with you?' to which a suitable reply would be Danke, gut.
Darf ich Ihnen Detlef vorstellen? - may I introduce Detlef to you?
Entschuldigen Sie, bitte - excuse me please.
Verzeihung - Sorry
Danke Thanks or Dankeschön Thanks very much.
Bitte - please or don't mention it.

Note the spelling for Gute, this is because Nacht is feminine. Coping with gender is one of the more difficult areas for English speakers learning German. In German there are three genders; Masculine, Feminine and Neuter.

Before finishing this lesson its worth pointing out that the 'long words' for which German is famous often means we learn more than we think! Examples from this lesson are Wieder meaning again and the verb Sehen 'to see'.
